Potassium fluoroborate

Potassium fluoroborate is a white powder or gelatinous crystal, slightly soluble in water and hot ethanol, and can be used as a flux in welding, among other applications. It is slightly soluble in water and hot ethanol, insoluble in cold ethanol, and insoluble in alkaline solutions. Its density (25/4°C) is 2.5 g/mL, and its melting point is 530°C.

1. Used as a flux in welding and as a raw material for the production of other fluoride salts. It can also be used in electrochemical processes and reagents.

2. Used as a flux in hot welding and brazing, as a raw material for producing boron-containing alloys in aluminum-magnesium casting, and as a filler in heavy-duty grinding wheels where resin is used as the abrasive binder. It helps purify light metal slag during the welding and fusion of silver, gold, and stainless steel. It is also a raw material for other fluoride salts and is used in electrochemical processes and reagents.

3. Potassium fluoroborate is used in low-chromium acid chromium plating and in lead-tin alloy electrolytes. The industrial-grade product contains 95% potassium fluoroborate. For chromium plating applications, the industrial-grade potassium fluoroborate must have controlled levels of chlorides and sulfates. Potassium fluoroborate can also be used for texture etching of aluminum alloys and for etching titanium and silicon wafers.
